见到朋友,说Long time no see,在英语国家颇为流行,而这当然是‘很久不见’的直译 ,不合英文语法.正确说法是It’s a long time since we last saw each other之类.然则西人为什么会学中国人说话?
原来从前英国人来华经商,学到当时华人‘中学为体,西学为用’的直译式英文,即所谓pidgin English或洋泾滨英文.他们回国之后,抱着开玩笑心情,继续说些洋泾滨‘警句’,于是乎,我们大汉文化Long time no see风靡彼蛮夷之地,慢慢成为彼日常用语矣.一九四零年代流行歌”No Can Do”也把我们的‘不能做’在英语国家发扬光大.Pidgin一字是怎么来的呢?原来英文business（生意）一字,我们祖先觉得难读,于是马马虎虎读做pidgin.这种英文是中西方做生意时用的,所以叫pidgin English.今天,英文This is not my pidgin等于说This is not my business（这和我无关）,pidgin仍是business的意思.
